The JMC is a Cape Classic, and the first in three gruelling races that make up the BOS Sport Mountain Challenge Series, amplified by Jaybird. Entries are open, and it boils down to a fairly simple choice… 39km, 24km or 12km?
The Jonkershoek Valley is a mountain scene to rival any across the world. Massive turrets and cliffs of orange-faced quartzite hold fortress over a collection of rambling mountain streams and waterfalls. It is a wilderness running experience that serves up a main dish of brutal climbs and gnarly descents, along with a side dish of unimaginable biodiversity and natural splendour.
The popular event attracts mountain lovers from across the Cape and many from further afield. With the 12km positioned as a tough, but manageable introduction to mountain running, a diverse field of athletes take on the challenge starting at 7am on 18 May 2019. With more than 1 800m of vertical gain in the 39km JMC Extreme, the day stretches well in to the afternoon as the final weary warriors are welcomed home. Once again, a carnival type environment will be set up at the start / finish line, with food vendors, Saggy Stone beer, live music, trail gear on sale and a professional MC to keep spirits high. Partners such as First Ascent, Jaybird, Steenberg and BOS Sport supply an impressive prize loot, in addition to the prize money awarded to top finishers.
Well-known names already confirmed for the BOS Sport Mountain Challenge Series, amplified by Jaybird include Bernard Rukadza, Siviwe Nkombi, Naomi Brand, Bianca Tarboton, Lucas Adams, Josh Chigome, Jono Black, Oriole Bolus, Caro Jordaan, Bronwyn Hastings and Cana Peek. The race at the sharp end will be fierce.
As always, the mountain is revered for its notorious ability to show us who is in charge. Those considering stepping up to the challenge should spend some time understanding the compulsory kit list, as well as the route and terrain description on www.mountainchallenge.co.za.
But, as with any life-changing challenge, the finish line will make it all entirely worthwhile.
